I love this song and I've got a very favourite memory of listening to it. The first person I've ever interviewed as a radio host was Wayne Coyne from The Flaming Lips in his dressing room at Manchester Apollo and this song came up .. basically, we were talking about favourite films and he mentioned It's a Wonderful Life and I said yeah that's a great film, it's an actual fact we've got a song inspired - we being Elbow, we've written a song inspired by It's a Wonderful Life, which was called George Lassoes the Moon - it was a very early Elbow song that I wrote about the frustrations of being in a small town and wanting success, wanting to see the world in the way George Bailey does in the film It's a Wonderful Life .. and then much to our mutual astonishment and happiness Wayne Coyne mentioned this song Are You a Hypnotist .. when George Bailey - if you've never see the film - when his guardian angel comes to visit him and shows him what his life would be like like .. George says to him 'What are you, some kind of hypnotist or something?' .. and that was the inspiration for this song, there you go.
